City Council to Consider the Comprehensive Land Use Plan

Ann Arbor cannot address the high cost of housing without building more homes, but many types of housing are currently illegal to build in most of the city. The Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) process is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to guide future zoning laws in ways that advance affordability, equity, sustainability, dynamism, and long-term economic vibrancy. Many of you have participated in this process, and your voices helped make the third draft of the CLUP the best version yet.
Last week, the City Planning Commission unanimously voted to send the CLUP to City Council. This vote was a powerful acknowledgment that the status quo is failing residents. On Monday, October 20, City Council will consider taking the next procedural step to move the plan forward. Neighbors for More Neighbors A2 will be showing our support in Council Chambers. Please come out if you can – and read below if you are feeling inspired to make a public comment.
Here’s what happens next: More Neighbors A2 will continue to urge Council and CPC to adopt the CLUP without any additional delays. The CLUP is already long overdue, and the community feels the impact of that delay every day. Once the plan is adopted, advocacy will focus on a critical next step: Turning this vision into law through zoning reform. But that isn’t all—we will continue to identify and address all the causes of the housing crisis, urging Ann Arbor to be realize its greatest potential as a thriving city that welcomes more neighbors.

Racially Restrictive Covenants in Washtenaw County

Our friends at Justice InDeed will be sharing the hidden history of Washtenaw County through a new map of 9,000+ racially restrictive covenants. Justice InDeed is a community collaborative project that seeks to better understand and repair the harms done by racially restrictive covenants in Washtenaw County. These covenants shaped where people could live, excluding Black families and others from neighborhoods across the county. Three community shareback sessions will be held on October 21 and 28th. Imagine with us what’s next.
